Villa Mercedes brings new concept for 2017

The glamorous Villa Mercedes, set in lush, tranquil gardens is a San Antonio hot spot.

Villa Mercedes is a glamorous setting for a delicious dining experience. Originally built in 1901 as a private residence the majestic house is set in lush, tropical-style gardens. Tables are dotted around a shaded terrace with plenty of space to relax in. There is also a classy outdoor cocktail bar and a Moroccan-themed chill-out area where you can recline on a daybed with your pre-lunch G&T.

We arrived early on a sunny afternoon and were still there quite a long time later; always a good sign of an enjoyable meal. By 14:00, the place was almost full and the atmosphere was buzzing. Diners are a cosmopolitan mix with locals and visitors alike enjoying the tasty Mediterranean Fusion menu.

We were eager to experience the fresh new food concept that has recently been introduced as well as an extensive kitchen refurbishment, equipping the chefs with top of the range facilities. The head chef, Ramiro Valdez, has returned from his trip home to Uruguay with new ideas and inspiration for a contemporary approach to his dishes.

Fabulous views over the marina

Raw and full bodied, the tasty carpaccio dish

On arrival we were greeted warmly by the charming assistant manager, Josh, who looked after our every need. Drinks were on the table almost before we could sit down and accompanied by the Ibizan staple, crusty bread with alioli (garlic mayonnaise) and juicy olives marinated in citrus and herbs. As we admired the sunlight shimmering on the sea and the boats bobbing in the harbour, an array of delicious starters began to appear.

The first dish presented was a carpaccio of beef garnished with a Taleggio cheese emulsion and lime zest. The meat was from the acclaimed Galician Rubia Gallega breed and I am reliably informed was succulent and tender. The juicy garlic prawns came next in a sauce of spring onions with a very pleasant kick of chilli. A fresh quinoa salad with a dressing of lemon zest and Asian mustard seed, fresh leaves and slices of sweet orange was like spring on a plate.

A platter of fried fish and seafood including calamari, prawns and even shark completed the starters. Served with homemade tartare sauce and grilled lemons, this is a real ‘dig into it' dish, ideal for sharing.

Fresh, zesty flavours

An array of Villa Mercedes' fine food

After a short break and wine top-ups, it was time for the main event. Between us we sampled four of the main courses. For meat lovers, fillet steak was served perfectly medium-rare with flavours of rosemary enhancing the beef.

Octopus is a popular choice on Ibiza and the one we sampled here was super-tender and nestled on top of a crushed herb mash; exquisite. The subtle and sweet taste of the line-caught hake was enriched with sesame and served on an unctuous celery cream with endive. We hardly had room to try the roasted baby chicken but we are very glad we did. Moist and mouthwatering, this is a dish to come back to enjoy again and again.

Succulent side dishes

Beautifully presented, tender sweet potato sides

Sides were not neglected either. Sweet potatoes with hints of cinnamon, thinly sliced fried potatoes in their skins and cauliflower cooked with garlic sprouts completed the scrumptious spread.

In truth, we were all completely stuffed by this point. However, in the interest of providing a thorough review, we managed to polish off a home made ice cream flavoured with the traditional Ibiza recipe for coffee liqueur known as Cafe Sa Caleta. It was a perfect end to a perfect meal.

Children and dog-friendly

As well as the a la carte menu you can also select a very reasonable daily special menu which changes every week. Bring the kids along and they can choose from their own menu at just €8.50. The other surprise is that the restaurant is dog-friendly to so you don't have to leave your four-legged friend at home.

In the balmy summer evenings, there is live music to enjoy with extremely popular performances from the likes of well-known local guitarist Paco Fernandez. There are also Flamenco dancers and cover bands to choose from. Select the act of your choice to accompany your amazing meal and be sure to book in advance. With great food and quality entertainment, you can't go wrong.

Many people describe a visit to Villa Mercedes as the highlight of their holiday. Don't miss the opportunity to join the discerning diners who return time and time again. Go on, give your tastebuds a treat. You won't regret it.
