Think of Ibiza, think of an animal to represent it and you've probably already envisaged an image of a lizard in your mind's eye. They're everywhere in Ibiza; real ones, lounging on warm rocks in the sun, and represented in paintings, sculptures and ceramics in bars, restaurants, houses and shops all over the island.
Now, they've been the subject of a study by National Geographic Young Explorer Dr. Neil Losin and his colleague Dr. Nate Dappen so that they can create a book about them. Called, The Symbol: Wall Lizards of the Pityusic Archipelago, the coffee table book will be available in Spanish, English, German and Italian and the two scientists postulate that it will be a perfect souvenir from a visit to the islands.
There is a wonderful gallery of photos available online which shows the brilliant blue and yellow coloured lizards which are found on Ibiza, Formentera and the little islets off the coast, including Es Vedra, where some spectacular photos were taken from the summit.
A couple of videos by the scientists really do illustrate just how beautiful the landscapes, flora and fauna of our small islands is – take a look.
