For two million people every year an holiday in Ibiza is the best thing since sliced bread. Unfortunately the environmental impact of this sudden influx of tourists, especially in the high summer
months, has become untenable.
The high numbers exceed the island's environmental capacity, generated a huge demand for land, water and energy, while producing an increasing volume of wastes. The Ibiza Preservation Fund, a charitable organisation, was set up with aims to help preserve Ibiza's exceptional beauty and natural value.
Two of the organisers of last weekend's Ibiza Healing Day are setting off on a sponsored walk round the island to raise funds for the fund. In the best traditions of English eccentricity Toby Clarke and Tristan Soames are going to set off today at noon from Ibiza Port to walk in different directions around Ibiza's lovely coastline.
With only enough food and water for 24 hours and just €1 each, they'll be relying on help from the people of Ibiza on their hike which is estimated to take between 8 and 10 days.
