San Antonio is well known for being Ibiza's number one resort for young people. Not so well known is that in winter it's the number one destination on the island for thousands of pensioners from Spain enjoying a subsidised holiday in our wonderful mild climate.
If the town hall and Island Government get their way it will also play host to around 15,000 golden oldies from northern Europe – mostly Holland and Germany whose pensioners will now benefit
from similar subsidised breaks in the sun.
It's fairly obvious that the pensioners aren't the world's biggest spenders but the important thing for the town's hoteliers is that it keeps them ticking over all winter bringing income to cover overheads and avoid the costs of closing and then reopening every year.
The pensioners get to enjoy warm sunny days, lots of trips laid on, and a complete break from the cold climate of the central peninsula or northern Europe.
