Space for Deep Dish and Laurent Garnier – top names added to Radio 1 weekend

Set times this way.

Radio 1’s hype machine has cranked into overdrive this week. Looking to the immediate future they’ve added the very hot Deep Dish and somehow managed to lure Laurent Garnier over for his only gig in Ibiza this summer.

Looking to the past they’re distributing a slick mag chronicling their ten years on the island, including examples of mayhem they’ve created along the way. Radio 1 is an admirably liberal institution with high production values, a genuine commitment to serving its stakeholders (the UK public) and an anarchistic streak.

an R1 souvenir mag, today

  • In 1996 the crush of the crowds broke windows at Mambo. Check also the unsettling pic of We Love’s Darren Hughes eyeballing Pete Tong doing his show. Clearly the death stare is a tactic in employment for many years
  • In 1998 Lisa I’Anson was accompanied by her then colleague Ian Parkinson, who recalls the night she famously went missing thus: "I was with her at the entrance of Manumission, but she disappeared into the VIP, and into a world of her own.”
  • I’Anson (who didn't turn up for her show the next morning): “Who did I hang out with? Who didn’t I hang out with! What would I say to anyone who hadn’t been to Ibiza? Approach with caution. Or stay home and switch on Radio 1!”
  • In 1999 Annie Nightingale accused a (male) Pacha dj of shunting her off the decks and into the kitchen
  • Sara Cox provoked great controversy in 2000 when she suggested “the Queen Mother smells of wee and got the crowd to sing her happy birthday as a bit of a joke – but the repercussions were as big as when Ali G said ‘motherfucker’ on the show”
  • In 2003 P. Wee Diddy, the name-hopping US Rapper, arrived at Pete Tong’s Punta Es Moli show straight off a yacht he’d sailed over from San Tropez, dressed in a bathrobe, with a girls in bikinis and clutching a bottle of champagne
  • In 2004 Nic Fanciulli said that broadcasting live from Ibiza for the Essential Mix was a “very personal moment. I really did think Radio One taking on six up-and-coming new DJs for the station was a massive risk but it was also very ballsy.”

Also included is a ambivalent statement from José Sala, mayor of San An.

“We are all aware that noise pollution can cause health problems and disturb the well being of our citizens, protected by the state and European rule. We ask the people responsible for Radio 1 to moderate your activities and accomplish the current legislation in our islands.”

That’s the Beeb told, then. Which leads us on to this year (all times local - GM +1).
