If the mayor of San Juan gets his way then Ibiza will have a luxury spa resort in the not too distant future. His plan is to convert an unfinished, abandoned and ruined block of apartments at Caló d'en Serra to a therapeutic coastal hideaway for stressed out executives.
If bells have started ringing at the mention of this building, it’s because it’s reared its ugly head in the news many times before. Originally designed by the famous architect Josep Lluís Sert during the seventies, it stood carbuncle like, spoiling the coastline for years, having been abandoned soon after construction started.
A few years ago it was back in the headlines as a demolition project paid for with funds from the unpopular and unwieldy Ecotax. Yet again it became an unfinished project as the demolition was never completed (as was the case with so many Ecotax projects.)
Now, it’s been recognised as having certain architectural merits and may finally be used as a building of some sort.
We’re not holding our breath on this one!
