Ibiza's second city made headline news all over the world last week, and this time for all the right reasons. Such august journals as The Sunday Times, The International Herald Tribune and even Pravda all reported the heroics of one David Meca, who swam the 68 miles from Javea near Benidorm to San Antonio in 22 gruelling hours.
Despite suffering from exhaustion, hypothermia and jellyfish stings to the face he insisted on swimming the extra distance to San Antonio from the official finishing line of the Isles Bledes, just off the coast.
A crowd of over 1000 including all the local dignitaries greeted him as he was pulled from the water and taken to hospital to be put on a saline drip and have his body temperature slowly raised back to normal.
His exploits were shown all over Spain on live television and there were hundreds of articles written about him in newspapers in many different languages. The tourist bosses in San Antonio were so pleased with the publicity that they have invited the swimmer to represent the town at this year's big FITUR travel fair in Madrid. Meca is thrilled to do this as he now intends to come and live in Ibiza where he can enjoy its warm waters at a more leisurely pace.
