Whilst the Spanish have only just started to celebrate Halloween in the last few years, they have been solemnly marking the 1st November, All Saints' Day, for many years. This is the day when the dead are honoured and remembered, and all the cemeteries are decorated with wonderful flowers of all colours and scents.
On this theme the boss of the cemeteries in Ibiza has revealed that for some unknown reason, perhaps the salty atmosphere or type of earth, the bodies buried in the walls of both the old and new cemeteries in Ibiza do not decay. To hurry the normally natural process along, the cemetery staff put a chemical called Bioenzimex in the tomb which helps to degrade biological material.
However, island dwellers who would prefer to be cremated have a high price to pay for this as Ibiza has no crematorium! A final journey has to be made all the way to Palma on neighbouring Mallorca and adds two to three thousand Euros to the cost of dying.
