It's absolutely true that you learn something new every day. Until today we had no idea that there was such a thing as illegal parking in Ibiza town!
With cars positioned in every vacant square inch of space, on zebra crossings, on the pavement, in the middle of roundabouts, in the entrance to shops and bars, and on top of one another, it was difficult to imagine that the responsible local drivers could actually be doing this illegally.
The shock came when the police released statistics that they had issued 2,438 fines of €50 in 18 months for parking in prohibited areas - the most lucrative zone being the Calle Manuel Sorá near the old market. They also issued 1,711 fines of €90 for parking in designated loading and unloading areas, 1,548 fines for parking on the pavement and 873 for parking on zebra crossings.
Next they'll be telling us we have to drive on the right and take roundabouts anti-clockwise!
