Our tiny local hospital Can Misses continues to advance apace. It was only last year that we reported that the first successful extraction of vital organs like the liver and kidneys from a recently deceased donor had been performed.
Now the medics have successfully removed the lungs from a clinically dead donor and these together with the other organs will be used to save the lives of at four people and improve those of many more. The lungs are the most difficult organs to remove because they have the shortest survival time once extracted.
As yet the hospital only has a limited capacity for organ removal and transplant and would probably be overwhelmed if George Best, Hurricane Higgins and Larry Hagman all arrived for a boys' holiday on Ibiza!
