Ibiza's wildlife sometimes is lost to sight under the weight of publicity given to the island's other attractions. It's not that well known that there are certain species of birds and animals which are endangered but still have a foothold here.
The virot, a type of puffin is one of these and the environmental department is doing its best to make the island a safe haven for it. This week they have authorised the association of hunters to capture some feral cats which are menacing the virot colony.
It seems that when the cats can't get enough food from rubbish bins they start to raid the nests of the puffins. The cats will be humanely captured using a baited box and then returned to their owners (if they can be found) or put to sleep.
