The urban landscape in the centre of Ibiza town is set to undergo a dramatic transformation over the next few years. The council have come up with plans which will completely change the area, demolishing old buildings and replacing them with new, more functional, structures to house council departments and a new justices court.
The cost, estimated at up to €60 million, includes the demolition and replacement in other areas of town of the Sa Graduada school and the 'housing projects' apartments nearby which were built in the 50's and now have structural problems. Having completed this, the new development will start by having an underground car park constructed and then the new council offices and a 600-seat auditorium will be put in place.
The work will of course cause tremendous disruption but the council reckon that they'll have the bulk of this type of work completed by the 2005 tourist season.
