Another example of Ibiza's rich history has been discovered amongst the many roadworks taking place around town. Workers in the Avenida España, one of the main routes into town, have uncovered a temple dating back to the Phoenician/Punic era, right in the middle of the road.
Archaeologists have pinpointed the exact period of the temple from the texts found there which mention the names of the Punic gods Esmum, Astarté, Melqart, and Baal. The discovery has now opened up an enormous 'debate' about what to do with the access into town, as it is estimated that it will be at least 3 years to excavate the temple properly.
