Phew!

It's official. We're having a heatwave. Though it's still only June a temperature of 36.6 degrees centigrade was recorded by the Regional Meteorological Institute last week and confirmed as the highest ever for this month.

It's official. We're having a heatwave. Though it's still only June a temperature of 36.6 degrees centigrade was recorded by the Regional Meteorological Institute last week and confirmed as the highest ever for this month.

Records have been kept for over 40 years and the only other times this temperature was reached were in July 2000 and August 89.

This is great for holidaymakers lounging on beaches, but unfortunately the consequences of the dry heat can be disastrous and already thousands of square metres of vegetation have been destroyed by fire in San Antonio and Cala Llonga.

But not everybody is complaining, as sales of air conditioning units have left the shops empty as they have disappeared like 'hot cakes.'
