Ibiza will soon join the rest of Spain in the 20th century when a new 'out of town' shopping centre is built in the Can Misses suburb of Ibiza town.
Currently an enormous hole in the ground at the side of the 'Multicines' cinema complex, by November, it will have been transformed into 14,500 square metres of pure retail therapy. The plans include two subterranean floors with 300 parking places, landscaped gardens and green areas, and plenty of those all-important shops. Negotiations are ongoing with national and international retailers to take up space in the centre, although as yet none have formally signed any contracts.
Our prediction is that the entry of some big retail players into the Ibicencan market will soon change the archaic opening hours and attitudes which still persist in most shops here. Already the residents of Can Misses are welcoming the opportunity of being able to buy something else apart from popcorn without having to make the long trek over the pedestrian footbridge into Ibiza town!
