If there was any proof needed that tourism is the most important part of the island's economy then figures from a recent study by the Island Government provide it.
All the work contracts which were issued last year, have been analysed and they show that over 8,500 were for waiters and barmen, closely followed by nearly 6,500 hotel cleaning staff. However, coming up quickly on the rails is the construction industry, which issued over 10,000 contracts to semi-skilled and unskilled labourers.
