Ibiza Resident DJ: Ramon Castells

After we've recovered from Space Opening, we catch up with one of their ressies...

Where are you from?

I grew up in Vilanova i la Geltru, a town close to Barcelona. That's also where I started dj-ing and enjoyed my first radio shows as well as club gigs.

When did you first come to Ibiza?

In 2000. Already back then I knew very clearly that I want to live in Ibiza to be a professional DJ, and the island accepted me well.

Where did you first play in Ibiza?

In my first year I had two residencies, one at Naif on the road to San José and one at Rey de Copas (now MINT) on the sunset strip in San Antonio. At Rey de Copas, I used to play chill out sets around the sunset time (I actually played there for more than eleven years!). After sunset, I then used to drive to Naif (close to KM5) to play there. Naif was one of the most beautiful places in Ibiza at that time and also was a venue frequented by loads of celebs. So my first Ibiza summer was very intense!

Tell us about some of the places you've played in Ibiza?

The club I always loved most to play is Space, simply because of the great atmosphere and superb quality and professionality of everyone involved! I also have great memories of my sets at big clubs like Privilege, Pacha, Es Paradis and Eden as well as smaller venues such as Somni (now Sankeys), La Diosa, Pin Up, Underground, Lucifer and B.For. Apart of that, I played chill out sets in bars and lounges like Las Dalias, Nassau, El Ayoun, L' Elephant, Bambuddha Grove and in sunset cafés like the aforementioned Rey de Copas, Kumahras, Sunset Ashram, SunSeaBar and also Café del Mar.

Where is your main residency on the island now?

At Space. I had my first gig there eight years ago and 2012 is already my sixth summer as a Space resident DJ. Apart of that, I am also playing a lot at KM5, Sunset Ashram and Café del Mar this summer.

What's so good about there?

Each of these venues belong to the most emblematic locations of the island. They all provide top quality in what they do and are simply part of the magic of this island!

Which other DJ has been the biggest source of inspiration in your career? (Ibiza or not)

There isn't only one. The versatility of Carl Cox, the fundamental work in the world of electronic dance music of Sasha and the evolution of spanish producer David Tort are three important pillars in my personal musical progress.

What have you been up to during the winter?

I was on tour with the Space World Tour and played many great gigs, but the most exciting gig this winter was surely the Space Ibiza new year's eve gig in Brazil. 5000 people going mad to our balearic influenced beats was a great experience!

Tell us about your production plans at the moment.

I presented two of my new productions ("Nexo" and "Untel") at the Miami WMC and I'll have a compilation coming out this summer. Other than that, I'm working on various remixes for other artists.

How can DJs who are residents in Ibiza avoid just being DJs who are just residents in Ibiza?!

I think it's quite easy to see if you succeed in Ibiza if you look at the results. In my opinion, you do see if someone captures the energy this island sends out. And if you do get it, you radiate these vibes during the whole winter, no matter where you are...
