Artist: SEFF
EP: Jack's Back
Label: Hot Creations
Release date: 02/02/15
SEFF's Jack's Back EP opens with the powerful, emphatic and immensely popular Like That, a synth and bass-heavy track that, whilst having strong bumping bass lines, still manages to avoid the ordinary. With interesting, quirky little changes in bass, both subtle and powerful uses of synths and a strong repeated and driving vocal line this is the best track on the EP. SEFF seems to absolutely nail the house/techno crossover on this track, with enough presence from both genres to make this club ready, whilst retaining a strong sense of creativity that can often be lost when making music fit for a dance floor.
The EP's namesake comes next, with a jackin', hard-hitting style that is incredibly memorable. A little more nuanced on the synth front than Like That, Jack's Back still retains a high-energy attitude. Jack's Back also makes great use of subtle, repeating lyrics giving it an extra dimension and a ghetto feel.
Trying desperately to find something wrong with this EP, one might say that the final track, Zoot, is the weakest. Coming after two excellent tracks is always going to be hard, and Zoot does make a decent show, with its incredibly hard hitting and bassy presence and Caribbean vocals, plus a darker feel that isn't present within the rest of the EP. Despite this, the track feels less memorable than its predecessors, despite still being of worth. One thing is for sure about this strong EP: it sounds much better played loud, and shows a bright future for the already established SEFF.
