Album of the week: Eats Everything 'Fries With That'

The main course was a real floor-shaker, but it's the dessert that will be on repeat.

Charismatic Bristolian Eats Everything has risen from relative newcomer to established house mainstay in a matter of years. After plenty of successful EPs, awards, and the launch of his Edible brand, Dan Pearce has now decided to strike out for 2015 with a debut compilation LP, suitably titled 'Fries With That?'. Not one to take himself too seriously, Eats even did a promotional Boiler Room session featuring tracks from the album in a Bristol chip shop – absolutely worth checking out!

Comprised of two discs, the first, 'Main Course', is “a collection of records that I am really feeling at the moment and hope will stand the test of time,” according to Pearce. 'Dessert', by contrast, “is basically a collection of my classics, either records I grew up with, ones that got me into house/techno, or I have discovered along the way and have become classics to me."

The first, “modern” mix is a trademark Eats Everything affair, brimming with peak-time dancefloor energy and bounce. A sample about a guy named Paul who likes ass and Judy Garland mixed into Neville Watson's steadily pulsing Red Light Forever proves an attention-grabbing opener. There are hints of tribal vibes on Tumba by Flux Mode, which then progresses into a solid bass-house section. Punctuating the maximalist sound is standout track Got To Be Movin by Herbert, whose lush strings in the stripped-back sections and catchy vocal hooks provide a real touch of class. Daniel Trim's Asimo is another highlight, if purely for its unapologetically simplistic strobe-paced throbbing. Ghetto by Kingpin Cartel is a fantastically climactic closing track; originally released in 2007, its funky bassline and strings are a great example of the feelgood house of the noughties.

Similarly, Move Your Body by Korda is a fitting opener to Disc 2 - you can't start a “classics” compilation without some good old-fashioned piano chords and diva vocals. These good vibes are kept up by the tongue-in-cheek floorshaker Open The Door by DJ Shorky. After this groovy intro we move into late-night tech territory with Quo Vadis' wubbing, warehouse-echoing synths and the solid, relentless heartbeat of Never by Robotman. We even get treated to garage-esque vibes on Do You Want Me, before the full-on disco-infused euphoria of The Word Is Love finishes things off with a flourish.

Fries With That? certainly delivers the goods as a first compilation from a DJ best known for his blend of underground house, Bristolian bass and old-school US techno. Whilst 'Main Course' is undeniably a real floor-shaker of a disc, it is 'Dessert' that provides some real depth for repeated listening.
