A new exhibition by American neo-conceptual artist Jenny Holzer comes to the Lune Rouge and Art Projects Ibiza galleries, opening June 21 2016. The works feature her signature focus of using words and ideas in public spaces and draw inspiration from writing, poetry and literature. In this exhibition, visitors will get to see some of the artist's iconic LED artworks as well as a selection of stone benches and a specially commissioned piece of work.
The LED installations can be seen at both sites and will showcase Holzer's text series Truisms, which comes with a Spanish translation, Inflammatory Essays and Living and Survival. Holzer first began working with electronic signs in 1982, finding that the platform allowed her to focus on content and message delivery at the same time.
Also on display will be a series of new footstools and benches crafted from rare stone like Azul Bahia or the iridescent green Labradorite; both also feature lines from Truisms and Survival. Also being shown is Arno Pair, two curved benches made from Carrara marble whose text speaks of the struggle of dealing with the aftermath of a great love, originally being an account of losing someone to AIDS. Alongside the benches is All Fall, a LED sculpture with multiple texts layered in a complex composition.
Holzer comes from the feminist group of artists like Cindy Sherman and Barbara Kruger that emerged at the start of the 1980's. This group all shared the idea of finding new ways of making commentary part of visual objects. Holzer has become most recognised for her LED signs and has deployed her large-scale installations for advertising billboards, projections on architectural structures, and illuminated electronic displays. She is also known for her use of a wide array of media including painted signs, paintings, posters, photographs, sound and video.
Whilst in Ibiza, Holzer will undertake her first commission here using raw materials from the island's countryside and coastline. She will be engraving poems on cliffs, monumental boulders and on bedrock. The exhibition runs until the end of this year; please check opening times for Lune Rouge and Art Projects Ibiza by visiting their websites. Private viewings available on request.
This is a unique chance to see the works of a great American conceptual artist , mark your calendars today.
