Patron Saint's Day of Sant Jordi / St George's Day

Running over fire or eating roast beef - both are great options this patron saint's Day of Sant Jordi or as many would know it, St George's Day!

This Wednesday, 23rd April is patron saint's Day of Sant Jordi, or St George's Day.

The small village of Sant Jordi de ses Salines in the south of Ibiza will be honouring its Patron Saint by starting the day at 9.30 with a free book stall in the library. This will run until 17.00 hrs.

Solemn mass at midday in the church will be followed by a procession, then a traditional Ibiza performance by the Grup Folkloric Sant Jordi de ses Salines. The City Council and workers of the parish will be offering wine in the church square.

From 18.00 hrs there will be live music and dancing, and at 23.00hrs the spectacular Correfocs, or "fire runs" will take over the streets of San Jordi. This is a Catalan tradition of chasing away bad spirits and demons and involves people dressing up as devils and dancing with the crowd amidst a cacophony of fireworks and drumming.

The day's celebrations will be brought to a close at 23.30hrs with a live band playing a fusion of Catalan Rumba and Cuban music. Quite the combination!

Ibiza Lodge 44 will be offering a more traditionally British St George's Day Celebration Lunch and Entertainment.

From 14.00 hrs on Wednesday, you can enjoy a three-course roast beef lunch (chicken and vegetarian options are available too, as is a special children's lunch) at Tapas in San Antonio.

There will be live music, DJ and bouncy castle all for €20 per person, €5 for children.

Reservations are essential by calling 650 871 085 or mailing langleykirke[@]gmail.com

Ibiza style or British style, Happy St George's Day to you all!
